I don't have a good answer and haven't looked at the numbers in detail, but the weekend performance was very different from the first movie.

The first movie had $20 million in midnights only, strong Friday matinees and a low IM OF 2.27.

This movie had $25 million in lateshows from 8pm, weaker Friday matinees and a very strong Saturday.

My guess is that families who really wanted to see the movie ASAP, but not at a midnight screening, were brought forward from Friday to Thursday because of the earlier first showing times. This would explain the stronger Thursday evening and weaker Friday matinees.  While families who saw the first movie on Saturday also went to see this movie on Saturday, which would explain the high IM.
