I hope someone takes the time to calculate the number of the films you mention that were actually MADE by Hollywood. Not just distributed.

Posted by: goodvibe61 on Dec 07, 00:21 in response to second gary's post But. . . this is also the year of "Boyhood,"...

A couple of them. Birdman to a certain extent if you loop Regency with Fox. Annapurna primarily did Foxcatcher.

For the most part, Hollywood did not make these films you've mentioned. They bought distribution rights for North America perhaps , but they did not strategically decide to invest in the making of them.

I WISH they'd had a hand in more of these. That would have been awesome.

#1 is particularly true, especially as it's going to continue, if not get worse, over the next 5 years {nm} numbersix_99 Dec 06, 13:40

trick is not to get discouraged and complain about it. there athe re always great small films out there, you just have to look hard for them Moviesnob Dec 06, 14:38

Fair point. It was heartening to see a film like Blue Ruin, which was Kickstarted I believe, perform so well (relatively!)) {nm} numbersix_99 Dec 06, 15:41

have you seen It Follows? its probably 2015's Blue Ruin. I like BR more, but its pretty good {nm} Moviesnob Dec 06, 17:32

Was It Follows crowdsourced? I saw it at VIFF. The first hour is great, but then it completely falls apart {nm} JohnErleVan Dec 07, 01:00

not crowdfunded {nm} Moviesnob Dec 07, 10:07

I did indeed. Think we chatted about it in Cannes. Really enjoyed it. Hope it does well. {nm} numbersix_99 Dec 07, 06:57

Moviesnob, you continue to be priceless. I love you. Ted Hope; "The Nazi's are here". Moviesnob; "The trick's to not complain about it. {nm} goodvibe61 Dec 06, 16:37

I'll try it another way. I prefer to be a part of the solution. {nm} Moviesnob Dec 06, 17:17

As long as it's not VOD, which Ted conitnues to proclaim as a big part of the problem. {nm} goodvibe61 Dec 07, 14:53

you're misunderstanding. ted's talking about Netflix's SVOD not VOD. BTW Ted owns a SVOD platform - fandor Moviesnob Dec 07, 14:57

Moviesnob, what is SVOD, TVOD and AVOD please? {nm} DTravel Dec 07, 20:34

But. . . this is also the year of "Boyhood," "Foxcatcher," "Snowpiercer," "Birdman," "Whiplash," "Force majeure," "The wind rises," . . . second gary Dec 06, 19:21

I hope someone takes the time to calculate the number of the films you mention that were actually MADE by Hollywood. Not just distributed. goodvibe61 Dec 07, 00:21

I suppose my question is whether the fate of Cars 4 or Planes 8 has any bearing on the production and distribution of the kinds of films. . second gary Dec 07, 07:03

The question is: which movies do you want to see: Thor 12 or 12 Years A Slave? Green Hornet or Boyhood? goodvibe61 Dec 07, 10:06

Ted is not as hopeless as you are. You are just reading the parts that support your point of view. You should read the whole thing Moviesnob Dec 07, 10:12

and one thing you refuse to consider is that without Xmen, theres no Birdman {nm} Moviesnob Dec 07, 10:12

There's no Way to Prove that - it's simply HogWash Speculation. {nm} RotoHockeyYTD2014 Dec 07, 10:50

I completely disagree. Completely. It's simply not the case. {nm} goodvibe61 Dec 07, 13:40

So I guess what you're saying is: Ted Hope's got it all wrong. Hollywood's got it all right at this point. God Help us All. {nm} goodvibe61 Dec 07, 13:46

I said I agree 100% with Ted. I don't think Hollywood has it right. Thats why I work for an indie label. Moviesnob Dec 07, 14:46

I don't think I'm worse than "Accept the death of Hollywood Films For Adults". Or goodvibe61 Dec 07, 14:35

this just happened to me this week. A film I've been looking forward to got into Sundance. I excitedly emailed the sales rep congrats Moviesnob Dec 07, 14:54

Because I live in a small NE college town with a good independent theatre, I don't have to choose between GOTGX and WHIPL. second gary Dec 07, 14:17

i'll take Thor 12, Boyhood, and Green Hornet, thanks MrZero Dec 07, 22:42

not those examples. Disney sold off Miramax long ago. But some studios still want to make movies for more cultured tastes Moviesnob Dec 07, 10:14

if they are prebuying, or doing negative pickups, then they are strategically investing in the making of them Moviesnob Dec 07, 10:07

What is a "negative pick-up"? {nm} second gary Dec 07, 10:15

the distribution company agrees to pay a set amount upon completion of the film. the production company then can take Moviesnob Dec 07, 10:17

Oh. . . *that* negative. :) Thanks. {nm} second gary Dec 07, 13:47

combine all their box office totals and they don't even come close to one Hunger Games installment charlie Dec 07, 01:13
