Considering the timing of the apology, imo it looks like they are trying to get the inevitable outrage out of the way early
in order to minimize the effect it might have closer to the release date. Releasing it the day after Thanksgiving should generate the least coverage.
People are writing about it now but it probably will be forgotten by the time the movie comes out aside from small mentions. Or at least that is what I imagine Lionsgate might be hoping for.
