I remember a time about a decade ago when it seemed like the record for widest number of theaters on opening weekend was broke yearly.
Looking back, it turns out my memory was pretty accurate, with the record being broken yearly between 2007-2010. It was even broken on two consecutive weekends in 2007, with Spider-Man 3 and Pirates 3.

Prior to this period, the record held for about three years, from 2004-2007, with Shrek 2. The record has not been broken since 2010. In fact, looking at the 10 widest releases of all time, only one, Secret Life of Pets, is from the past four years.
My question is, why was this record constantly being broken for a period, and has now gone stagnant? And does else anyone think this is yet another canary in the coal mine for theatrical releases? In a time when the focus is more and more on gigantic, theatrical movies and opening weekends, shouldn't this record still be broken on a regular basis? Are theatres starting to close at a rate that means this record can never be broken again?
