I had a long post typed out in response to this a few minutes ago. For some dumb reason I did a Google search on something The Wire related and lost it all.
Basically my arguments are (now the short versions)...
1. Character Arc - We've never seen anything like WW's transformation on TV.
2. HBO vs AMC - The limitations of not being able to use curse words or be too graphic have not affected BB, and that is quite amazing.
3. Acting - Cranston and Paul are arguably the best acting duo to ever grace the screen. Their Emmys alone can attest that many feel the same.
4. Awards - BB is constantly been recognized as great, while the critics only nominated Wire for 2 Emmys ever... and no wins. It's a shame it was like that because it's an epic show, but it's just another mark against it in a comparison to BB.
5. Don't Take My Word For It - There are hordes of fans, critics alike that say the same thing. Metacritic scores for BB are pretty much the best of any show. Though The Wire is very close as well on MC and the same on IMDB.
You said yourself that the past few seasons (BB) have gotten better, where I believe The Wires last season was it's weakest. There's good reason for that... it's hard to consistently intrigue your audience on a long running show. BB has continued to trump it's prior seasons year by year. Last nights episode was no different.... it's just plain excellent all around.
I ran across this link this morning and thought I would share. Please have a read, as it's on this very subject: http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/6763000/bad-decisions
I can't tell you you're wrong, because like I said, it's your opinion. I did chuckle though when I saw that you said The Shield was better than BB... never heard that one before. Miami Vice was a good show, but I may be a little too young to fully appreciate what it was (as I watched when I was a kid and never revisited).
We can agree to disagree on this one. :)
