Nominated for Outstanding Comedy series, Ally McBeal, created by veteran TV writer/producer, David E. Kelley, premiered on Fox for the 1997-98 season. Altogether, Ally has garnered thirteen nominations this year, three more than last year. Ally McBeal concerns the life of the title character, Ally McBeal, a young Boston laywer, and her trials and tribulations both in the courtroom and with life as a single woman approaching thirty. While the focus of the show is increasingly on Ally's search for Mr. Right, the one hour comedy is also known for its zany ensemble cast, which expanded in its second season by adding more lawyers to the law firm where most of the series' action takes place. Ally McBeal surprised and delighted its creator and network when the show became a break-through hit of the 1997-98 season even though it was pitted opposite Monday night football in a gamble to enfranchise a female viewership -- a strategy that ultimately paid off.
