Before her recent lead role in Mansfield Park and her star turn opposite Robin Williams in Bicentennial Man, Embeth Davidtz was probably most familiar to movie fans as the abused concentration camp maid in Schindler's List. Born in Trenton, New Jersey in 1966, Davidtz actually spent her formative years in South Africa, studying and acting in classical and contemporary drama in both English and Afrikaan. Davidtz became one of the most acclaimed actresses in South Africa, winning the South African equivalent of the Oscar for Night of the Nineteenth, an Afrikaaner pyscho-drama. Davidtz thereafter returned to her native U.S. and has been a resident stateside since 1991. After Schindler's List, Davidtz further cemented her reputation with an exquisite starring performance in the Merchant-Ivory Victorian drama, Feast of July, in which she played a pregnant woman obsessively in search of the cad who deserted her.
