Geoffrey Rush provides an over-the-top performance as the Marquis de Sade in Quills. Rush flexes his dramatic flairs in his portrayal of the outlandish writer on the edge of madness. Rush won the Best Actor Oscar for his performance as the pianist David Helfgott in Shine. He was also secured an Best Supporting Actor nomination for Shakespeare in Love.
Quills speculates on the climactic final days of the Marquis de Sade spent in confinement at Charenton Asylum for his pornographic writings. The period piece is set in 18th-century France also features Joaquin Phoenix as the priest who runs the asylum, while Kate Winslet plays a laundress who helps the Marquis publish his work.
