OK, here's what we know: It's a movie about a sorority...or maybe a fraternity...um, it's a movie about crazy college kids who will likely make rude jokes, plot against each other, and take off their clothes. It's a movie about rush week, the period when freshman go through hell to prove they really, really, really want to join this house or that house. These rituals typically employ alcohol, spanking, physical brutality and, in the case of sororities, weird psychological games involving which colored M&Ms you eat from a bowl.
We know that it's a movie pitched and sold (to Universal) as Animal House-meets-American Pie, which is odd, because American Pie was Animal House-meets-She’s All That, and She's All That was Pretty in Pink-meets-My Fair Lady, and everybody knows that My Fair Lady was just Nobel Prize-winner George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalian with music. So when you break that all down, this new movie is going to be Pygmalian-meets-Pygmalian, except that the writers (Jessica O'Toole and Amy Rardin) are unlikely to snag the Nobel Prize and, we’re sure, would rather just have the “six-figures” that they got.
We know (or guess, at least) that the movie’ll have lots of low humor and Greek letters and probably some gratuitous nudity and attractive young people. We also know this: the movie has all the fixings to be an irrationally large moneymaker and will make careers for some people (none yet cast) and provide wacky frat-style hijinx for the rest of us. It's barely into development and it’s called Rushing and it has, we're sure, a big, fat future.
