Most people (including me) lost money on that one. Too much group-think by predictors with no one thinking under 60 was even possible.
I find this happens a lot with sequels, where everyone assumes the sequel will open bigger than (or at least around the same level as) the previous film, but with 20/20 hindsight the general audience was thinking "do I really need to see a fifth film with this character, especially when the last two were so terrible?"
So your OW lesson is - for franchise movies, look at the last film in the series. If audiences liked it, expect the next one to do well. But if it sucked, expect the next one to under-perform.
Some recent examples of movies that under-performed, even with low expectations - HNOV3, DIEH5, SCAR5, PNAC4...
Not that it works every time, but there's always a reason - TREK2 (first film was received very well, second underperformed against high expectations), SUPR2 (reboot + Nolan meant audiences were willing to give the franchise another shot), GIJO2 (semi-reboot + The Rock as lead)
Your second lesson is - if everyone is thinking the same thing, think up a contrary opinion and see if it makes sense.

Absolutely! That's why this game is so great, it's fake money, but if you like movies, and box office, in my case you'll end up learning on Aug 03, 10:18
