I suppose the question becomes this: how seriously are we supposed to take the new government which plays at ruling the city in those five months? Are we to understand that the League is engaged in nation-building of a sort, and that the bomb has a deterrent factor preventing national forces from interfering? The... trouble is, the trials are so ludicrous, it's difficult to imagine a non-satirical purpose / reading to them. If the Terror of the French Revolution is really the model, then it has to be presided over by a real character with a credible moral aim.
