movie related, I swear: so my mother had a stroke 5 years ago this Thanksgiving. she's was paralyzed on her left side completely at just 51.

Posted by: lobogotti on May 07, 13:55

don't want to get into a lot of personal issues about it, but I'm her caregiver.  she has the mind of a 16 year old, so I take care of her and in a way I have since I was 13.

anyways, she's in an assisted living facility.  it's a nice place about 25 minutes from me.  I see her at least once a week.  she's been in this place now for 3 years.  she's now 55 and I am 37 (she had me young, and I've never met my father so no one to help her). most of the residents are 20+ years older than her.

I see a lot of sad days in that establishment.  I look younger than I am, so the residents ask me for help and insist on hugging them or just talking to them for 5 minutes (as if I was their own son/grandson).  at the XMas parties and other events I attend, a lot of the children and family aren't present.  I'm guilty of not being around as much as I should, but I really make an effort.  I don't fault any of the families for not being present more, I don't know their stories, I'm just stating my observations.

so as this place has become a part of my life, I have started volunteering my time and spending so many hours a week with the residents.  playing cards, soduku, helping with electronics, hanging pictures, moving furniture when I can.

I took my mother out for an early mothers day.  got back and a lady whom I've met 30+ times named Mary said hello.  she was praising her daughter who had just sent her some shirts and her son who sent her some See's Candies.

now my mother is always bragging about how this persons son owns a suite at the Pacers, or this persons brother is the guy who wrote that sci-fi movie with Vin Diesel (David Twohy) or this aides son is about to be drafted by the NFL... and I never pay any of it much mind. in this particular case, she told me a long time ago that Marys son draws comics books and he's real famous.  sure

so I'm helping Mary today.  she wants me to take her picture, and put it on Facebook for her son and daughter to see.  she has no idea how to do either.  so after 15 pictures and many different poses, I start into her tablet to find her FB account.  the first thing that comes up is this:  https://twitter.com/Bob_Layton?ref_src=twsrc%5Egoogle%7Ctwcamp%5Eserp%7Ctwgr%5Eauthor

I said "what are you doing on this page?" and she says, "that's my son Bob."  she proceeds to tell me he created a lot of marvel superheros and is the main Iron Man artist.  I just did a little digging and the guy is legit:  http://www.boblayton.com/gallery/

dude was co-creator of Iron man, created War Machine and Ant Man?!?!  he was just interviewed by Collider at Captain 3 Premiere:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=60DgzTIu9zw

now most people wouldn't know who he is, but it was still pretty cool to see after having helped her a lot and never really knowing much about her.  from what I'm reading he's somewhat of a comic book legend.

it's funny, as I watched that interview he looks just like his mother. I want to say thanks to Mary for always buying girl scout cookies from my daughter, we really appreciate it.  Happy Mothers Day Mary.

You continue your care of your mother and her friends. It makes her feel good and in turn, you feel good too. Been there, done that. {nm} GruntNoNeck May 07, 15:29

it just makes you realize how lucky you are and think about where life takes you. how short it all really is. {nm} lobogotti May 07, 16:20

While the story is wonderful, the real point is how commendable you are. You should be proud. {nm} numbersix_99 May 07, 16:28

your words are kind and appreciated, I definitely could do more, but wrestle with a lot of the past. regardless lobogotti May 07, 17:57

ha, I remember my mother saying she was in it (and of course a star). It's called Sarge, link inside... lobogotti May 07, 18:03

There is a great line late in "Tokyo Story" about how important it is to look after one's parents while they are alive. second gary May 07, 16:33

no way? Is that true? if so, that's quite cool. {nm} lobogotti May 07, 21:02

This could have been posted as "my mom lives in a home with a lady whose son is ..." BUT it wouldn't have been nearly as interesting! {nm} Rocket123 aka PVL Admin May 07, 20:39

I've always been a fan of detail in stories. I was hoping to relay that sometimes is good to slow down, listen and learn. lobogotti May 07, 21:07

I don't think there's another player here that is as genuine as a person as you are, which is quite refreshing in this context slappydavid May 07, 23:06
