Movies

OK. I went and saw Pete's Dragon today. Pete's Dragon. Oh. My. Goodness.

Don't let this film pass you by. Go see it.

This elicits similar emotions as The Iron Giant. Or a certain Extra Terrestrial. Or Babe. Inside Out.

No, I'm not joking. This is a very, very strong family film. It will work on your kids. And it will really, REALLY work on you.

Sweet God what a surprise. This is my favorite kind of movie going experience. Just about every expectation surpassed. I had practically zero expectations (I'm not saying it's less of a film for that). And to that, let me ask: How could that be? How could this film glide on in at the very end of the summer like this? It feels like a disservice to the movie. I'm afraid of a bunch of kids already headed back to class, and somehow they and their parents miss this. That's not right. This is way too good, too powerful and strong, to just be a dog days of August film taking up space in the marketplace. The last thing in the world this is, is product.

Give this story just a short while to develop. And then, it's a swiss watch baby. It will mow you over. Beautiful.

I was a mess in there LOL. It was as emotional a ride as a quality Pixar. It understands the history of classic stories of childhood looking to adulthood. It deserves a place at the table. It deserves to be seen. To miss this would be a big time miss.

Do yourself a little favor. When you're having a lousy day this week, maybe work sucks, maybe there's some issues. Check out in the early afternoon, and go sit down with this. By yourself, or take your kid.

Now, I also want to say...Seriously Disney. You blew it with this film. You blew it. This should have been one of the biggest films of the year. There is zero reason, ZERO REASON, why this was not as successful as The Jungle Book. Which brings me to this.

Most people know I'm not big on sequels or remakes. But I have to bow down to Disney this time. While they're doing all kinds of stuff wrong these days (it's a pretty long list), these two films are exceptional surprises to me. The original Jungle Book is a treasure to me. The original Pete's Dragon....not so much. But they've taken these two original films, and they've made two very powerful, two very moving films that can stand up proudly next to the legacy of Disney movie history. I'm confounded over the lack of hype for this film. I don't know whether to throw Disney a party for the movie they've made, or bonk 'em in the head for the way they've handled it.

I can't believe I didn't rush out to see this film, that I wasn't impatient because by now I'd heard tons of word of mouth and love over this film. After seeing it, I can't believe that didn't happen. The critical community was not nearly loud enough this time around. But I'm not going to lose my great feelings for this film right now. In fact, I'm using it as a lesson. In the old days, you went into alot of films cold. COLD. You checked them out and you had your own opinion. That part of this story is great. So that's what I"m taking with me.

I didn't see it coming. And that's okay, because I saw it for myself. Holy cow.
