The Brotherhood of the Wolf, a.k.a. Le Pacte des Loups, was one of the most expensive French films ever made, and one which has enjoyed monster box-office success in Europe. Based on a real event, The Brotherhood of the Wolf tells the tale of a phantom creature called the Beast of Gevaudana who ruthlessly killed over a hundred people in the 18th century. Town folks desperately sought a solution for the creature. In comes King Louis XV who handpicks a youthful detective to bring an end to the violence. The detective investigates the tales of the terror-stricken people and the validity of such a creature.
Director Christopher Gans and screenwriter Stephane Cabel combined folklore, martial arts, fantasy, and mystery in creating a blockbuster similar to Tim Burton's Sleepy Hollow. Monica Bellucci (Malena) stars along with Samuel Le Bihan, Vincent Cassel, Emilie Dequenne, and Mark Dacascos. Universal Pictures has picked up distribution for the U.S.
