In August 1999, Tom Arnold appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, and divulged that True Lies 2 was soon to be in development. Arnold's anecdotes on the show implied that Arnold Schwarzenegger and Jamie Lee Curtis were both interested in the project, since the three of them had attended a screening of True Lies in order to reacquaint themselves with the film. About a week after Arnold's announcement on Letterman, Cameron acknowledged that he would direct the film.
