Winner of the Golden Lion at the Venice International Film Festival, Zhang Yimou's gripping tale of a life of drudgery and poverty in mainland China actually has the seal of approval from Chinese officialdom. A proud Chinese delegation accompanied Zhang Yimou to Venice as he received his second Golden Lion, his first coming in 1992 for The Story of Qiu Ju.
The bright ray of dauntless hope in this otherwise gloomy tale is represented by an indefatigable 13-year-old substitute teacher, played by Wei Minzhi. In an effort to keep her students from dropping out if school,she goes to extremes to help retain and educate these children, who are barely her junior.
