Willem Dafoe undergoes a transformation for his role in Shadow of the Vampire. Dafoe disappears underneath the prosthetics to become the vampire method actor Max Schreck. His brilliant interpretation is simultaneously savory, comical, and sickening. The Los Angeles Film Critics Association named Dafoe as their Best Supporting Actor. Dafoe was previously nominated for his supporting role in Platoon.
The Lions Gate film Shadow of the Vampire recreates the making of 1922's German horror classic Nosferatu: a Symphony of Horror. The early German film was surrounded by several bizarre incidents during its filming, including the disappearance and death of a few of its crew members. Perhaps Nosferatu, director F.W. Murnau, played by John Malkovich, casted a real vampire for the film?
