If you think about the movie as an "apprenticeship" story. . .
... then I think the ending is not contrived, even if it is calculated to set her an unusually difficult final trial (i.e. defeat an opponent who can see you even while you cannot see him). The ending is a real proof of her readiness, in addition to resolving the abduction plotline.
