What did you see this past week? The Trip to Italy (C at best, despite A scenery and other flashes of comic Aishness)
For whatever reason it just does not seem to me to be a Michael Winterbottom film. Or a Winterbottom script. And if the repetition of the beginning of the Strauss lied "Im Abendrot" (a song about death) is to be taken for a joke (which the newspaper woman's late-movie joke about misused and annoying music in another film implies), then it is a joke at the expense of a great song and at the expense of the movie itself. Maybe there is something very arch afoot (ahem), but I felt the effect was lazy and shabby, and surely there are tighter ways to make the same joke, or a joke about the same topics.
"Return of the Jedi" is still more of a disappointment, as sequels go, but not my much.
