I don't think it's a matter of "no big deal" as much as it is a complex issue for some to navigate. Some ideas inside:

Hollywood is built on connections and networks, and those count for a lot. Think about if you had a friend who was suddenly arrested for a sex crime they committed years ago, when you didn't know them. What would you do? Stand by them and support them through the trial, even if you thought they were guilty? Visit them in prison? Or drop them straight out of your life?

Money talks. If you've got millions at stake in a project, you want to make a return on that investment - not have it disintegrate because of something that happened years ago. Again, think about what you would do if your business partner was arrested for a sex crime - suddenly it becomes your career and your livelihood that is at stake.

The Oscar campaign. The timing of this is pretty convenient - there's a movie being marketed as a slam dunk Oscar nominee about to be released, and an old story about the people behind the movie comes to light. Even if you think the story is true and the people involved got away with a crime, you can also think the timing was more about hurting the movie's Oscar chances than making sure justice occurs.

The casting couch. It still exists in Hollywood, and you can argue that it's transactional - "you sleep with me, I give you a part, we all consent, everyone's happy and no laws were broken". But if actors who sleep with producers/directors get roles and those who don't sleep with them don't get roles, the casting couch becomes systematic, and if it's systematic is it transactional or is there coercion? And if it's coercion is the casting couch rape? Those are uncomfortable questions that some people would prefer not to dig too deeply into.

Add all that up and it's no surprise some people in Hollywood are saying stuff like "it was years ago", "it went to court and he was acquitted" etc.

Note - the views above aren't necessarily my opinion on this issue, it's just my outside take on the answer to your question.

CNN: Harvey Weinstein defends "Birth of a Nation'" director as a 'good person' amid backlash Peterlee Aug 23, 19:42

Harvey Weinstein is not someone I would want backing me in that kind of situation. {nm} DTravel Aug 24, 09:42

Fox has started their national tv campaign for Birth of a Nation with the Oct 7th date {nm} notfabio Aug 23, 19:49

Why does Hollywood feel rape is no big deal? Not trolling, legitimately asking. {nm} Bubba_Fett Aug 23, 20:37

Who stated that "Hollywood" feels that rape is no bid deal?! {nm} DTshakes Aug 23, 22:52

I'm new to the story but wasn't he acquitted in 2001? Isn't that the definition of having his day in court? DTshakes Aug 23, 22:51

yes, and yes {nm} slipping jimmy Aug 23, 23:10

I think the issue is the various problems with the verdict and the victim... numbersix_99 Aug 24, 01:33

Actually the sexual relations prior likely got him off with reasonable doubt... TwoMisfits Aug 24, 05:50

Acquitted when date rape was barely acknowledged as a crime. {nm} leo21 Aug 24, 06:02

bull****. "date rape" has been acknowledged since the 80s. {nm} slipping jimmy Aug 24, 08:39

And still about as impossible to convict on - the "technicality" that got the 1st conviction thrown out was "inefficient counsel" TwoMisfits Aug 24, 10:04

the rules of evidence and the Constitution are not "technicalities." and unless one of us was on the jury (i wasn't) none of us know exactly slipping jimmy Aug 24, 10:29

Rules of evidence vary by states - in some states, those phone calls would have been admissable - and in all states, they tell us the truth. TwoMisfits Aug 24, 10:40

Well rape isn't exactly a public endeavor--and we know "gentle, nice" public personas can have closets with skeletons. {nm} chosenone2oo5 Aug 24, 09:05

it's not a skeleton in a closet. it was on his own wikipedia page {nm} slipping jimmy Aug 24, 09:07

Look again at Wiki - that was all edited and added this month... {nm} TwoMisfits Aug 24, 09:33

The Wayback Machine's archived page (from April 2016) mentions it. (No doubt the page has been edited since) RogerMore Aug 24, 09:47

Yeah, look at the difference - night and day...one sounds like the victim falsely accused him - now, we know better... TwoMisfits Aug 24, 09:50

Ah OK, I thought you meant that the incident wasn't referred to at all. {nm} RogerMore Aug 24, 10:11

No - one way it was 2 sentences that made it sound like a false accusation... TwoMisfits Aug 24, 10:16

I was coming at it from the "Fox was surprised even though it was on wiki" angle. {nm} RogerMore Aug 24, 10:37

The Devil was in the details... Used2BeTwitterFamous Aug 24, 11:05
