I suppose it's disappointing for strong partisans of the movie to see its cast and crew accomplish its work with imagination. . .

... and then to get the impression that those who decided on marketing and distribution did not.  I don't want to be unfair to them; I don't have their jobs, I don't do their jobs.  But there are lots of films which achieved improbable success.  How did "District 9" get to 115M domestic / 210M worldwide?  How did "Gravity" get to 714M worldwide?  How did "The Blair Witch Project" get to 141M domestic / 249M worldwide?  Or "The King's Speech" to 414M worldwide?  These aren't genre comps at all, although "District 9" and "Gravity" have weak genre resemblances.

This perception may be exacerbated, too, given the quality of the films which are getting marketing lavished on them this summer.

rented Snowpiercer through iTunes and watched in my hotel last night on my iPad mini just fine. Great film indeed. lobogotti Jul 18, 19:21

District 9 is a great comparison for sci-fi, the others though no one knew ahead would balloon gross, but I can see how and why they did lobogotti Jul 18, 20:10

heretic! BURN HIM!! {nm} charlie Jul 18, 21:49

there are so many factors in play with this movie. very complex. and new models are hard for people to accept. Moviesnob Jul 19, 02:51

Screen count changes really threw the stock into ups and down. {nm} mishra Jul 19, 06:44

well said and agreed on Peterlee. {nm} lobogotti Jul 19, 06:48

by the way, Sunshine is a great example of a solid film, solid director, original concept, sci-fi and also has Chris Evans that lobogotti Jul 19, 06:54

"Snowpiercer" is getting much better critical reception than "Sunshine". But it is true that original Sci-fi film is always not a easy sell {nm} Peterlee Jul 19, 09:03

I guess Harvey expected "Snowpiercer" to receive mixed reviews; but critical reception is really hard to predict {nm} Peterlee Jul 19, 09:06

ie. "The Quiet American" didn't test well, and Harvey had decided to send that film straight-to-video Peterlee Jul 19, 09:11

Respect Harvey. He's a genius. {nm} goodvibe61 Jul 19, 13:36

part of the reason its getting such great reviews is a reaction to Harvey's threats to cut it. {nm} Moviesnob Jul 19, 11:20

Really? After seeing the movie multiple times, you think that why critics give it a positive review? {nm} goodvibe61 Jul 19, 13:37

some critics like making those kinds of statements, yes {nm} Moviesnob Jul 19, 13:42

Interesting to think about UNDSK as a comp to SNWPC (no spoilers) second gary Jul 19, 13:51

agreed, its been a great year so far. Although I didn't like Snowpiercer as much as some around here, it was pretty good. Under the Skin is Moviesnob Jul 19, 14:18

The "compassion" scene is gripping, and just amazing. And its ingredients are so few but perfectly done. {nm} second gary Jul 19, 17:34

Thank you very much, Moviesnob and lobogotti! But i guess if I am a studio exec, I would be worse than Tom Rothman.... {nm} Peterlee Jul 19, 09:00

I think it's time for YOU to let this go lol. I'll play one last time on this. The most important aspect on this is NOT ... goodvibe61 Jul 19, 11:20

It's profitable for CJ cause Radius will be able to pay overages on it because its making money. Overages = profit for both radius and CJ. Moviesnob Jul 19, 11:34

BTW the industry definition for "wide theatrical release" is not the same as HSX's. {nm} Moviesnob Jul 19, 11:36

not really. I'd say maybe 600 screens. Otherwise, for Indies, people confuse "Nationwide" with Wide. goodvibe61 Jul 19, 14:22

you're wrong. its far less. {nm} Moviesnob Jul 19, 14:32

Let's see. Two weekends ago. July 4th weekend. I watched goodvibe61 Jul 19, 13:50

Great. Snowpiercer launched on VOD July 11th. Moviesnob Jul 19, 14:16

Even worse. That was last weekend, and certainly I'd remember seeing SOMETHING. ANYTHING. I saw nothing. ZERO. {nm} goodvibe61 Jul 19, 14:46

And about Bong being "extremely happy". He's ripped Weinstein on multiple occasions now, and has been furious with him for months. goodvibe61 Jul 19, 17:31

I got a chance to meet him again in austin recently. He was pretty happy about the current release strategy. {nm} Moviesnob Jul 19, 17:56

What's he supposed to do? It is what it is, and it'll all be over in a couple weeks anyway when it's gone from theaters. goodvibe61 Jul 19, 18:13
