referring to a given period in time, and a rather brief one at that (in the broader scope of history) - say, the fifties to late sixties or so.

Historians operate with a metaphor: the pendulum(?) of history. We are always on the go between one extreme and the other, but gradually and slowly, so that the vast majority of the time, we are somewhere in the middle (meaning not in the utmost extremes).
