can provide a blue print regarding what personality is, exactly.

Many would or have argued that we are more or less acting out roles or parts we are dealt in life. The extent to which we are in control of these roles ourselves, is continuously under debate and subject to academical/scientific research.

When one says "in real life", I think "personality" - the fixed version of the self. The question is whether there in the academical field of psychology exists a firm concensus regarding what's firmly within the fixed version of the self.

As to Whedon, as point in case, my impression is that he is being himself. It's not an act. If one wanted to delve deep into this, one could try to look at what has inspired his thinking and his viewpoints, and at what time it became part of his personality. Was someone in his close family an activist in this field?

I also wouldn't mind knowing whether Whedon has a reputation for being a Hollywood/film industry male spokesperson for this perspective, or if he is one among many. Does he feel that if he doesn't say this or that, and write such and such public letters on such issues, that no one else would put those points across strongly enough? (I.e. does he himself see it as him being a necessary spokesperson - a "beacon", a champion of a cause, an industry stalwart in regards to a certain kind of thinking, etc.) (Please allow for my points not being precise, even if they ar written as though they would be - I'm writing off the cuff and temptatively, not authoritatively.)

Guess he is referring to the 100s of X-Men characters, rather than the FF characters. {nm} BSmurf Jan 28, 11:59

Quote doesn't seem to indicate this but I wonder from context if he is referring to most of the best female characters {nm} Rioter Jan 28, 12:19

I'm saying he stays in character. {nm} Facto Jan 28, 12:20

what "character"? he's written strong roles for women throughout his career {nm} charlie Jan 28, 12:32

That underlines my point - don't be obtuse {nm} Facto Jan 28, 12:37

Wow, you actually think oen can't a feminist "in real life", that it's just playing a "character". {nm} Antibody Jan 28, 13:13

I got the feeling that that was the misunderstanding here. I meant that he is true to his own personality, style and character. Facto Jan 28, 14:01

However, "strong female roles" (or "leads"), as a term, is an abomination. Facto Jan 28, 12:39

female roles have traditionally been written as weak or passive, so yes it matters to be gender-specific {nm} charlie Jan 28, 12:43

One can argue it that way, no doubt, but the Danish director felt otherwise. When you say traditionally, I believe you are thinking about or Facto Jan 28, 14:06

It's funny that you mention a Danish director and then mis-spelled egotists as "egotits"...because I immediately thought "Legotits". :) Paul2k Jan 28, 13:04

There are plenty of reasons to dislike the term "strong female" (character/role/lead figure etc) - and most of the criticism against the Facto Jan 28, 16:40
