It used to be a little more useful than it is now. Pre-orange (shudder) you could pull all trades made from it, sort of.
AFAIK, you could find out every trade made by every player including the quantity. Unfortunately, you couldn't tell what kind of trade it was (buy, cover, etc), and it was only updated every 15 minutes. It was nice for monitoring overall trade volumes but not much else.
A site called Faaborgs used to pull this data and display graphs and lists of most traded securities.
Exactly. The ticker is pretty much cosmetic and has little or no use as a trading tool. {nm} Jun 08, 09:23
