Fall Movie Release Date Changes

As the coronavirus pandemic continue to keep most Americans at home, major theater chains plans to remain close at least though late June. Hollywood has delayed some spring and summer movies until the fall and holiday seasons, which in turn bumps those movies further bacak on the release calendar.  Here's a running list of the release date changes of movies previously scheduled from September to the end of 2020.

New trailer for The Trip to Greece

IFC Films has revealed the official trailer for the comedy The Trip to Greece [TRIP4], which reunites Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan [SCOOG] with director Michael Winterbottom for the fourth film in their European road trip series. The Trip to Greece opens in theaters and VOD May 22nd.

First trailer for Train to Busan Presents: Peninsula

Well Go USA has unleashed the teaser trailer for the horror actioner Peninsula [PNSLA], director Yeon Sang-ho's sequel to Train to Busan.  Four years after the initial zombie outbreak, Korea has turned into a devastated post-apocalyptic world. Train to Busan grossed $2.1 million at the U.S. box office in 2016.  With a real life global pandemic,  Peninsula is sure to resonant with audiences when theaters reopen later this year.

First trailer for Greenland

A Norwegian distributor has uploaded the international trailer for the disaster film Greenland [GRNLN] starring  Gerard Butler [GBUTL] and Morena Baccarin [MBACC].  A family struggles to survive the cataclysmic event of a comet hitting Earth.  STX has currently scheduled Greenland to open on June 12th.

Spring Movie Release Date Changes

Within a week, the coronavirus pandemic has forced studios to alter their carefully laid-out release strategies and movie theaters to shut down across the nation.  The entire slate from this weekend to the end of May has been postponed or removed from the schedule for a new date to be determined later.  Here's a list of the major movie release date changes thus far.

Box Score: Onward retained first place amidst the coronavirus pandemic

The weekend box office is headed for a 20-year low as the COVID-19 crisis grows nationwide.  Onward [ONWRD] repeated in first place with an estimated $10.5 million, but dropped 73%, the steepest second weekend decline in Pixar history.

I Still Believe [ISBLV] debuted in second place with $9.5 million. The faith-based drama received an 'A' CinemaScore.

Bloodshot [BLDSH] earned $9.3 million to open at the third spot.  Audiences gave the actioner a 'B' CinemaScore.

Whisper Numbers: Are theaters Bloodshot or do moviegoers Still Believe?

With the coronavirus COVID-19 declared a global pandemic, Hollywood has begun to delay upcoming major releases. Unfortunately, it’s too late to move the three new films opening this week as well as the holdovers. How big will the bloodbath be as moviegoers avoid theaters, especially in California and New York? Its Pixar pedigree is unlikely to prevent Onward [ONWRD] from falling more than 50% this weekend to about $18 million.

Disney has revealed the official trailer for Pixar's animated Soul [SOUL] directed by Oscar winner Pete Docter (Inside Out, Up)Jamie Foxx [JFOXX]  voices a human who is in a near death experience as his soul crosses over to the other side.
