Have you thought about just making the Font Red instead of the background?
At least you don't have a black background - that's the worst.
But do what it's best for most people is the best you can do.
A couple years ago a site I visit alot changed their background to black and some other appearance stuff and it was un useable to me. I get a headache after 5-10 minutes from mostly back backgrounds. This started a heavy discussion on what colors and combinations work best and found out a site can't win. Some people can't handle white, some black. Bright colors bother people and too light is a problem for others.
KaiGee's site is an example of a good color layout for me. Grey is a great background and the print works fine. The green and read fonts work for me.
HSX Dude's site is ok, I wish he'd get rid of the black on the sides but since there is no print there it's livable.
For the worst layout - go to Boost Mobile's site. That is terrible.
