First a look at the past.
Since TV Stocks have come into being, there have been 35, count em, 35 ABC derivatives. Of that number, only 8 have delisted at 17 or more. This includes FLSFWD, DET187 and LFMARS which all deserved a better fate. Only 12 more delisted between 10 and 16 and 4 at 9, but to be fair, some were midseason shows that just did not have large first season runs. This includes CASTLE (10) BOPROF (9) and PRVPRC (9) still on the schedule., and PUSHDS. But there are a lot of shows that ABC has tried and pulled the plug. SURVSB, HANKTV, CAVEMN, BETOFT and the only one pulled after 2 episodes MYGER. Lets just say that the manager is not afraid to go to the bullpen even in the first inning.
Now for the new year.
Easy choice for the whole season is CHANGL. This is NOT BIONIC, or KRIDER. No technology beyond a cell phone is needed. Just make the women attractive, give them interesting cases to solve, wind them up and wake me in about 4 years. Thursday night leadoff should work quite well, up against X-Factor results and sit-coms. There will be a lot of folks just tuning to ABC for the whole night. Must see TV?
On the other end of the spectrum is PANAMT. As a travel agent, I have fond memories of earning free trips from the airline, and I love the (paid?) use of the logo. I just do not know if this nighttime soap will catch on. Is CRICC enough to get a sampling? It is replacing Brothers and Sisters which had lots of known faces, including SFIEL. It gets a lead in from Desperate Housewives, but that show is waning. Competition is CSI: Miami, but even worse, is the football delayed GDWIFE. For the non-DVR group, that is a HUGE factor, as CBS is delayed by about a half hour in most of the country almost every week. That means those on CBS will miss half of PANAMT and stick around for CSI. Personally, I think that this one will be on hiatus before November, or simply have its plug pulled by 13.
Another night-time soap is REVENG. Why do I keep conjuring up DRTSXM which limped its way to finish the 13 (without the DSUTH sleaze/name factor)? Its lead ins are a 2 hour comedy block and up against a weaker original CSI and a weaker L&O SVU so there is a chance for sampling, but with a soap, if you don’t get them by the cajones on episode 1, its hasta la vista baby. What else have you got ABC? Watch the ratings for early hiccups. Perhaps even move to Sunday night if PANAMT is weaker.
Now that we have you laughing, we have the hard to pronounce SUBURG. JSIST has a fish out of water comedy, in the hammock between MIDDLE and MODFAM (Both of which delisted at 24….bonus round!) and will have a chance to kick HAZAR and FRAGNT to the curb. The name will get you, but hey, they have a hit with COUGAR, returning in November.
Note: ABC has 2 more Tuesday night comedies, Last Man Standing and Man Up, slated to premiere in Mid October, so there will be more IPO’s to come. In the mean time lots of DWTS bonus coverage
