A possible fyi for Breaking Bad since you've not started it yet (NO spoilers inside)...
Like you, I never watched the show on it's original run (just finished it 2 days ago in fact). I really, really didn't like the 1st season and therefore had several aborted attempts to watch it in the last couple of years. I found it to be too cartoony and very unrealistic (I like a healthy dose of realism in my gritty tv shows).
Finally, I pushed through and eventually came to terms with the fantasy type portrayal of Walter White. By the time I got 1/2 way through the 2nd season my suspension of disbelieve allowed me to start to enjoy all the other things that the show did really well. I also think around this time the whole crew (Actors, wirers, directors and so on) really started to get more confortable with their duties and it really showed.
In the end, what I found was that this show did something that many shows have a very difficult time doing for some reason and ended up getting consistently better as each season progressed. By the time you get to the 4th and 5th seasons, I believe the show could stand with any other show out there.
So, in closing, if you have similar problems and just aren't feeling it, I'd encourage you to give it a little more time. The last 2 seasons greatly make up for any of the shortcomings that I found with the first 2. Enjoy!
