I don't have a strong opinion either way re: death penalty, but if you're going to do it, why complicate it in the name of "humaneness"?
You're still taking a life, why pretend that the State is somehow nobler than the one they are removing from the population?
Humans are remarkably easy to kill. We've been perfecting methods of doing it for millions of years.
Personally, I beleive that if we are going to have capital punishment at all, the "cruel and unusual punishment" stipulation should be re-written to "no worse than the victim of the crime endured". And make them public rather than private. I think after a few public dismemberments and people buried alive we'll get some serious discussion on whether we really want to have capital punishment.
As long as it's hidden away where very few can see it, no real discussion will ever occur.
