Wide release 650 or more theaters
Limited 649 theaters or less
Location Specific means only those markets. It is possible to have multiple theaters in a market (So that advertising could be spread over more than one venue, such as Midtown Manhattan, Soho, Eastside, etc)
Exclusive Means only that city. Many times only one theater but not necessarily.
If I am vague, it is because you do not want to be trapped by a hard and fast rule.
In addtion to the above, there is occasionally the word "National" which after 10 years still gets me. I would assume that there is no hard and fast rule that would translate into "wide" or "limited" only that the advertising will be coast to coast, even if only a few theaters in any give market.
"Platform" is in vouge at this time of year, where the hope is to build up from a few screens to wide, as word of mouth builds. The all time HSX platform champion was MBFGW wihich delisted before going wide and doing over 200M in box office.
Usually the terminology is taken from industry sources, not as HSX termis.
Finally, all numbers refer to theaters, or venues, not screens. So the Ziegfied in Manhattan (Very large) counts for one. The AMC 42nd Street nearby using 4 screens, 1 in IMAX, 1 in Real 3d, 2 in 2d, also counts as 1.
Hope this helps. Remember, distributors are finalizing theater count decisions right up to the Thursday shipping announcements.
