Set in a London suburb in 1971, East Is East follows a Pakistani-Anglo family that has six boys and just one girl. The film played at the 1999 Cannes and Telluride Film Festivals, where first-time director Damien O'Donnell received critical acclaim for his work. East Is East is based upon a play by Ayub Khan-Din, who also adapted the screenplay. The comedy stars Om Puri and Linda Bassett.
