A teenage girl, played by newcomer Michelle Rodriguez, talks tough and plays tough, though all this is a defense mechanism. She lives with her single father and her brother, and when the father decides to toughen up his son and train him to be a boxer, the girl decides that she too wants to box.
Over the objections of her father, she pursues her boxing dream and becomes the gym's first female champion. But then she falls in love with another boxer and the armor of her tough girl persona is pierced, forcing her to come to terms with her vulnerability and how it relates to her femininity.
Girlfight tied for the Grand Jury Prize for Best Dramatic Film at the 2000 Sundance Film Festival. Writer/director Karyn Kusama also took home the award for best director of a dramatic film.
