Nominated as a Best Foreign Language Film at the 1999 Academy Awards, The Grandfather is set in turn of the century Spain, and tells the epic story of a family that has been compromised by infidelity.
Fernando Fernán-Gómez stars as the Count of Albrit, an elderly man who has lost his fortune, and who returns from Peru to meet his two granddaughters for the first time.
Although both of the young women are certainly charming, the Count knows that one of them was born out of an extra-marital affair, but he does not know which.
As the Count tries to determine which of his granddaughters is worthy of his name and his love, he finds that love is thicker than blood.
The Grandfather is directed by José Luis Garci, who has had four movies nominated as Best Foreign Language Film.
