Although recent events have brought Afghanistan to the forefront of the international arena, filmmakers had long been workin to bring the plight of its inhabitants to light. Director Mohsen Makhbalbaf, best known for The Day I Became a Woman and Gabbeh, focuses on the challenges that people of Iran and Afghanistan face as victims of years of strife. Kandahar is a story about an Afghan woman who becomes a journalist after leaving the country as a young girl. She returns to save her younger sister who was injured by a mine. Although this thriller was shot in 2000, its premise is chillingly relevant in today's much altered world. Avatar Films distributes this picture set for a December 2001 release.
