Wonder Boys director Curtis Hanson earned an Oscar nomination for Best Director and won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for 1997's L.A. Confidential. The film was nominated for nine Oscars, including Best Picture. Wonder Boys stars Michael Douglas as a professor going through a midlife crisis while trying to finish the follow-up to his successful first novel. He takes up smoking pot in search of meaning and beauty in his life. Frances McDormand plays his pregnant mistress, while Robert Downey, Jr., is his book editor. Originally released last February, Wonder Boys faded from the box office. Paramount re-released the Curtis Hanson directed pic over the holidays with a new marketing campaign emphasizing the ensemble cast in hopes of securing Oscar nominations.
