Revitalizing Superman as the original superhero franchise, Man of Steel [SUPR2] sooped up an estimated $113.1 million to set a new opening weekend record for the month of June. Toy Story 3 held the previous high at $110.3 million. Counting the special Walmart screenings Thursday evening, the film has tallied $125.1 million. Although Man of Steel earned mixed reviews with critics, moviegoers gave the film an A- Cinemascore. The audience skewed 56% male and 62% over the age of 25.
This Is The End [JSVSA] debuted in second place with $20.5 million, and $32.8 million since opening on Wednesday. The R-rated comedy appealed to a crowd that was 60% male and 52% over 25.
Staying at number three, Now You See Me [NYSME] added $10.3 million to bring its total to $80.0 million. Fast & Furious 6 [FAST6] finished fourth with $9.4 milion to pump up its total to $219.6 million.
Last weekend's top film The Purge [PURGE] tumbled 76% to $8.2 million while fellow sophomore release The Internship [NTERN] dropped 60% to $7.0 million.
In its first weekend of wide release, Before Midnight [BFSU3] grossed $1.5 million to finish just outside the top 12.
