Moviegoers return to theaters in droves over the Christmas holiday weekend as The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies [HOBT3] repeated atop the box office with an estimated $41.4 million. The trilogy finale declined 24% from its opening to bring its total to $168.5 million.
Unbroken [UBRKN] debuted in second place with $31.7 million. The Louis Zamperini biopic has banked $47.3 million since Thursday. The audience was 71% over the age of 25 and 52% female.
Into the Woods [INTWD] opened at the third spot with $31.0 million, and $46.1 million in 4 days. The musical attracted a crowd that was 57% over the age of 25 and 54% female.
Night at the Museum: Secret of the Tomb [NMUS3] took fourth at $20.6 million, down just 20% from its debut. Annie [ANNIE] held even better at 95% in its second weekend for $16.6 million.
The Gambler [GMBLR] won $9.3 million to open seventh overall. The Imitation Game [IMITG] cracked $7.9 million in its wide expansion, while Big Eyes [BIGEY] tallied $3.0 million to finish outside the top 12.
