After setting the record opening for an animated film last week, Finding Dory [NEMO2] earned an estimated $73.2 million to also take the best sophomore weekend for an animated film. The Pixar sequel lost 46% to bring its total to $286.6 million in 10 days.
Independence Day Resurgence [IDAY2] debuted in second place with an underwhelming $41.6 million. 20 years proved too long a wait for the sci-fi sequel that appealed only to older fans that were 56% males and 67% over the age of 25.
Central Intelligence [CINTL] posted $18.4 million to finish in third place. The action comedy fell 47% in its second weekend to take its sum across $69.3 million.
The Shallows [SHALW] surprised with $16.7 million for the fourth spot. The shark-infested thriller attracte a crowd that was 55% females and 56% over 25.
Free State of Jones [FSJON] opened fifth overall with $7.7 million. The Civil War-era actioner skewed 53% men and 92% over 25.
In a moderate wide release, The Neon Demon [NEOND] took in just $0.6 million to finish outside the top 12.
