Whisper Numbers: Dune to bury the competition over Halloween weekend

The box office looks to be frightful for newcomers this Halloween weekend, which will allow Dune [DUNE] to retain the box office throne. The announcement of a sequel may entice some folks to check out the sci-fi epic, if they don’t already have HBO Max. Dune will likely still slide more than 50% in its second session to about $18 million.

Focus Features targets the disappearing older adult moviegoers with the R-rated thriller Last Night in Soho [LNSOH]. Star Anya Taylor-Joy may be winning awards for her TV work, but she is not yet a box office draw. Director Edgar Wright is best known for his action comedies, so a female-led psychological thriller may not resonate with his male fanbase. Opening in 3016 theaters, Last Night in Soho could settle for $7.5 million.

My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission [MHAWH] looks to bring out the anime series’ rabid fanbase. The previous installment My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising opened with $5.9 million in February 2020. My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission should be able to top that with around $7.0 million from 1602 theaters.

Halloween Kills [HALW4] may get a slight boost from its namesake holiday and earn $7.0 million during its third outing.

Playing in its fourth weekend, No Time to Die [JB25] has $130 million within sight as it targets another $6.5 million.

After a week in limited release, The French Dispatch [TFRDS] expands wide to 788 theaters. Wes Anderson’s previous two films 2018’s Isle of Dogs and 2014’s The Grand Budapest Hotel averaged over $8K per theater in their wide expansion. A slightly lowered PTA would put The French Dispatch at $5.5 million.

Antlers [ANTLR] finally arrives in theaters after the pandemic delayed its original April 2020 release. The R-rated Searchlight film may attract some horror fans over Halloween, but not much else. Showing in 2800 theaters, Antlers could hook in $5.0 million.

Amanada Seyfried stars in the R-rated drama A Mouthful of Air [AMOA], the latest Stage 6 release distributed by Sony. A Mouthful of Air may take in $500K from 816 theaters.

That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor
