Sony has released the full trailer for District 9 [DIST9]. The upcoming Sci-Fi action film explores a future where extra-terrestrials have arrived and are living as illegal aliens in slums around Johannesbourg, South Africa. While the initial teaser set up the premise, this new trailer has revealed director Neill Blomkamp's unique vision. District 9 combines a special effects-ladened Sci-Fi story with the documentary feel of the TV show 'COPS', exanding on the world Blomkamp created in such outstanding shorts as Live in Joburg and Tetra Vaal. It appears Blomkamp has successfully disguised socio-political commentary in the form of summer entertainment. The marketing campagin for District 9 started by plastering bus stops and billboards with 'For Humans Only' signs meant to evoke the racial segregation era of American History. Like the United States, South Africa has faced a rising problem of illegal aliens. Black South Africans, freed from Apartheid just 15 years ago, resent refugees streaming from Zimbabwe and other nations.
One can see why producer Peter Jackson [PJACK] had chosen Blomkamp to direct Halo [HALO], an aborted project which could perhaps earn a second life.
