Imagine what will happen when AVNGR delists. The index would collapse :)
One method I use for seeing where the market is heading on a particular day is to check out the Today's Top Price Moviers page for Moviestocks.
In particular, I compare the 20th-ranked movers for long and short. At the moment. the 20th upward mover has increased by $2.04, while the 20th downward mover has fallen by only .53.
That tells me that the market is up in a big way day. When the 20th movers have the same absolute value, it's not a good day for the market.

The DOW and similar indexes simply give an average of x businesses stock values. SBOs would work, but movies delist. {nm} May 07, 21:57
