Let me make sure I'm understanding this correctly -

"Everyone" assumed that this S.H.I.E.L.D. show would be set before the Avengers movie because Agent Coulson would be a character.  Right?

Have we all forgotten this is a comic book universe?  NO ONE is ever permanently dead in the comics, they always pull a Monty Python and get better!  Tongue out
