Not a dumb question at all, but the answer is as simple as you think it is. TV Stocks gain 1$ for every episode aired.

If only 8 episodes are planned, then it is a logical short.  Your point is also valid, however.  If the series blossoms and more episodes are ordered, the stock will rise.  the 2$ over is likely players that think this show will expand.  So 2 options exist: 1) buy the stock based on your own crystal ball of expansion possibility, or 2) short it with the rest of the cynics.

Personally, I am a cynic in this regard and will wait for the TV schedule to show me the $.
