The wide releases used to halt on Fridays but it was changed to Saturdays a few years ago.
The change was in part to generate more visits to the site on Saturdays. The notations about the stock halts being in Friday's calendar is a leftover from the change I think.
BTW player reaction like yours was a major reason for the creation of the .OW (Opening Weekend) derivatives.
