SHORT SELL HELP

I accidentally selected short sell when trying to sell max on a stock. I've never done a short sell and am not sure what it is and I can not get it to clear off my stock holdings sections as it says I have no stocks of that item when I try to dump it. How do I get rid of the short sell and get my money back as the explantions I've been able to find on this site of what a short sell is have offered no help.
