The Day I Became a Woman comes from Iran, where a cinematic renaissance is taking place. The film draws on three stories, all surrounding women of different ages and how they deal with a society that separates genders. The first story concerns a young girl who is kept from playing with boys her age because she is reaching puberty. The second story involves a woman who defies her husband's wishes by entering a bicycle race, while the third depicts an elderly woman going on a shopping spree because she fell into some money.
Director Marzieh Meshkini makes his debut with The Day I Became a Woman with an award-winning script from Mohsen Makhmalbaf. The film was awarded the Silver Hugo Award for Best First Film at the 2000 Chicago International Film Festival. Shooting Gallery is releasing the film state-side.
