Judi Dench gives another superb performance for Chocolat. Dench plays a feisty and lonely widow who regains her humor with the help of chocolate. Dench gained a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for Shakespeare in Love and earned a Best Actress nod for Mrs. Brown.
Miramax's Chocolat is a sweet celluloid concoction from director Lasse Hallstrom. Based on the novel by Joanne Harris, the story centers on a mysterious woman, played by Juliette Binoche, who moves into a small town and opens a chocolate shop. In no time, social order is turned upside-down by her confections in a variety of funny and romantic interludes. The mayor views chocolate as a sin and begins to see his power threatened by the success of the chocolate shop.
