Whisper Numbers: The Hunger Games battles blasts from the past.

The Easter weekend box office looks to be a close race between current box office phenomenon The Hunger Games [HGAME] and a couple of past phenomena from the 1990s. After its record-breaking opening, The Hunger Games fell more than 60% in its second weekend. The rate of decline should level off closer to 50% with The Hunger Games reaping around $30 million to squeak out another victory

The cast of American Pie return for their third sequel American Reunion [AMPI4]. Universal’s comedy franchise popularized raunchy, gross out humor and 2001’s American Pie 2 even held the opening record for an R-rated comedy at $45.1 million for nearly a decade. None of the cast has been able to maintain their stardom since the last film American Wedding opened to $33 million in 2003. Nevertheless, the nostalgia factor should be enough to bring back fans of the series. Playing in 3191 theaters, American Reunion could take in $29 million.

Fifteen years after shattering box office records with 15 consecutive weekends at number one, Titanic 3D [TTN3D] returns to theaters on the 100th anniversary of the sinking of Titanic. James Cameron and company have taken more than a year to do the 3D conversion and the results have been positive. Women remain the target audience, but many men will also be in tow. Titanic 3D opened late Tuesday night and has already grossed $4.75 million through Wednesday. The weekend should bring out more adults looking to re-experience the epic on the big screen as well as revisit a part of their youth. Opening in the same number of theaters 2674 as the original back in 1997, Titanic 3D may record $26 million from Friday to Sunday.

Clash of the Titans dropped 56% in its second weekend. A similar tumble for its sequel Wrath of the Titans [CLSH2] would leave $14.5 million. As a family film, Mirror Mirror [SNOWH] should fare better in its second weekend. A hold around 60% would reflect $11 million.

That’s the whisper from the virtual trading floor.
