Another weekend, another sequel underperformance as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows [TMNT2] led with an estimated $35.3 million, dwon from the $65 million debut of the first film. Although the sequel was better received by crtics and moviegoers, many of the older fans did not come back. 40% of the audience was under 18 versus 27% for the first film.
X-Men: Apocalypse [XMEN6] was dethroned to second with $22.3 million, down a whopping 66% from last weekend, The superhero sequel has banked $116.5 million.
Me Before You [MBFYU] earned $18.3 million to open in third place. The romance skewed females at 81%, while 53% of the audience was under 35.
Alice Through the Looking Glass [ALCN2] took fourth with $10.7 million, off 60% from it debut. The fantasy sequel stands at $50.8 million.
Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping [CON4R] grossed $4.6 million to chart at the eighth spot.
Expanding wide to 819 theaters, Love & Friendship [LVFRN] did $2.1 million.
