Bringing home an estimated $103.2 million beyond the most optimistic expectatons, The Secret Life of Pets [PETS] scores the best opening ever for an original animated film, surpassing Inside Out's $90.4 million last year. Families made up 54% of the audience.
The Legend of Tarzan [TARZN] remained in second place with $20.6 million, down a respectable 46% from its debut. The Ape Man has earned $81.4 million.
After three weeks at the top, Finding Dory [NEMO2] finished third with $20.4 million to bring its total to $422.6 million.
Mike & Dave Need Wedding Dates [MDNWD] tallied $16.6 million to debut in fourth place. The comedy appealed to a broad demographic with 52% female and 50% under the age of 25.
Opening in just 287 theaters, Sultan [SULTN] charted at tenth with $2.2 million and $3.2 million since Wednesday.
